Located in Devon, Torbay Hospital plays an important role in the local community. The addition of a new £12.5m inpatient mental health unit meant that this role would become more integral. Housing a range of facilities, including treatment and therapy rooms, the £339k roof on this project was key to ensuring the building was made to last.
With the new unit playing such an important role in the building and local community, the client needed a roofing contractor they could trust. Consequently, the Exeter-based Progressive Systems team was brought on board to provide a complete solution.
Location: Torbay Mental Health Clinic, Torquay, Devon, TQ2 7AA
Contractors: Progressive Systems
System: Thermaweld - FireSmart
The team at Progressive Systems managed several challenges during the roofing project. This involved planning work around the roof size in combination with a large number of complex ducts and penetrations. To ensure the correct installation of the waterproofing, the crew took into account these characteristics and enlisted the help of the Technical Specification team at BMI Icopal.
During the project, Torbay Hospital was used as a Covid testing centre for the Torquay area. Consequently, construction of the new mental health clinic was halted mid-project and Progressive Systems needed to ensure that the ongoing work could be paused without compromising the success of the project overall.
Progressive Systems wanted to use a tested system that could be trusted to last. This is why they chose to work with Icopal to add a tapered insulation scheme for a warm-roof build-up using the Thermaweld FireSmart system. The benefits of this include creating a fall on the roof to ensure an optimised drainage design. Specifiers are increasingly selecting this type of insulation design known as a cut-to-fall solution, to effectively manage rainwater drainage on their flat roof installations.
Because of the logistical restrictions, the full system build-up had to be completed in stages. Careful project and time management were key to ensuring the ongoing performance of the roof when the project was paused due to weather and access restrictions. To ensure the integrity of the roof while work was paused, Progressive Systems primed and installed the vapour control layer, making it watertight for up to four to five weeks.
Thermaweld FireSmart is a tried, tested and trusted flat roofing system that delivers a long-term solution to help reduce repair and energy costs. Providing an expected service life of at least 35 years, the building now has a roof of unwavering quality and dependability.
Thanks to the adaptability and diligence of Progressive Systems’ team during the Covid shutdown, Torbay Hospital now has a much-needed, increased capacity. Since opening in June 2022, the new unit is playing a vital role in helping to tackle a shortage of beds for mental health patients in Torquay, Devon.
The new mental health unit is helping to meet hospital staff’s expectations while delivering exceptional standards of care for the patients they look after every day in Torquay.
Proven across multiple flat roof projects nationwide, Thermaweld is a bituminous roofing system which offers trusted, best-in-class performance with a long service life while requiring minimal maintenance.
Suitable for use between -20°C and 90°C, it has been specifically developed to withstand the challenges faced by flat roofs in the UK, such as water, insect and pest damage, moss, fungi, lichen, moulds and bacteria.
Ideal for both new build and refurbishment projects, Thermaweld FireSmart has been designed for use as a torch-applied top sheet in a bitumen built-up roof system.
