The regeneration of Bradford Market (also known as Darley Street Market), in Bradford is designed to create a new hub for the local community. Spanning three storeys, the landmark development is home to numerous independent traders and brings together the best in food and produce as well as music, arts, culture, and entertainment.
Such a venue demands distinctive architecture, delivering functionality and modern design, alongside sustainability. The roof of Bradford Market is central to this, delivering an eye-catching “saw teeth” aesthetic alongside a very practical purpose. Sustainability is weaved into the fabric of the building, with the roof facilitating optimum positioning for around 200 solar panels – the energy from which will power lifts, escalators and lighting.
To undertake the project, IMA Contractors NRA Roofing worked alongside Icopal to specify and install this eye catching roof for the new development of Bradford Market.
Location: Bradford
Contractor: NRA Roofing Services
System: Monarplan PVC and Parabit Hot Melt Solo
To bring Bradford Market to life, it was essential for NRA Roofing to balance aesthetics and performance. From the inside, the Okoume finish needed to be blemish-free and installed to the highest quality as it will be on permanent display to visitors, while on the outside, a high-performing and watertight finish will underpin long-term reliability.
To protect the Okoume wood, the team had to navigate the unpredictable British weather and work quickly to make the building watertight. The installation of 10 rooflights – which would support natural lighting and ventilation, also needed to be factored into the overall design. This would require precision workmanship throughout the project to ensure consistently high performance across the roof. Alongside this, the roof needed to house around 200 solar panels, making the installation of a guardrail and step-over gantries essential to facilitating access for future maintenance.
As a new build project in the heart of Bradford, it was essential that every part of construction ran in line with schedules, keeping the project on track for a smooth and timely completion. In doing so, NRA Roofing utilised their decades of experience installing single ply systems to complete all elements of the roof installation on time – including the installation of the fascia and soffit to complete the roof.
Responsible for delivering the complete roof build-up, NRA Roofing specified the Icopal Monarplan PVC Single-ply Waterproofing system, alongside Rockwool insulation and TorchSafe TA VCL Sanded. Bringing these individual components together and, combining them with the team’s high levels of craftsmanship, created a roof system that delivers uncompromising performance.
The Single-ply roof build-up with waterproof membrane delivers a high performing and lightweight system that is flexible enough to accommodate the specific characteristics of the new Bradford Market – from its eye-catching design through to roof-mounted plants and solar panels. The Monarplan PVC system helps to deliver thermal insulation and an airtight construction, ultimately contributing to a reduced carbon footprint for the building – a core part of its design. Where the roof-mounted plant deck and terrace are concerned, Icopal’s Parabit Solo Hot Melt waterproofing system was used to deliver uncompromising performance in these areas.
Alongside the specification of Icopal systems, the NRA Roofing team worked closely with Icopal’s technical support team, undertaking U-value calculations, condensation risk analysis and wind uplift calculations. These additional measures ensured the roof would be fit for purpose and maintain the high standards required of a landmark project.
The revitalisation of the Darley Street Market in the centre of Bradford serves as a leading example of how modern thinking and solutions can breathe new life into the hearts of communities. Built around functionality and energy efficiency, the building creates a destination in the local area that brings businesses and people together.
The roof plays a successful part in this. Behind its eye-catching design that grabs the attention of visitors – both inside and out – the roof serves a very practical purpose. At its most basic level, it is protecting the building from the elements, but it also serves to facilitate a whole-building approach energy efficiency by becoming home to hundreds of solar panels and a natural ventilation systems.
