Every year we hold our prestigious BMI Apprentice of the Year Competition at our industry-leading training centre, the BMI Academy, in Gloucestershire. We receive applications from roofing apprentices all across the United Kingdom, with up to 20 flat and pitched roofing apprentice applicants making it to the final.
The benefits of your students being a part of this competition are endless, from giving your apprentices the platform to showcase the skills they have learnt at your college or training group, to networking opportunities with roofing industry experts.
Having a student reach the final of the BMI Apprentice of the Year is an impressive accolade for your college or training group, and is a great representation of the quality of learning students are receiving with you. Becoming one of our finalists is an invaluable experience to include on students’ CVs, and will boost their employability at the end of their time as a student.
The competition enables us to build on your college’s relationship with BMI and the support we can give you. All tutors are also invited to attend the annual in-person tutor forum we host, with a CPD topic, as well as a group trip which varies year to year.
“It opens their eyes to what they’re capable of and gives them belief in themselves. Every year I encourage all our apprentices at Leeds to enter the competition,”
David Mallory, Roofing Lecturer at Leeds College of Building
“The competition builds their ambition and introduces them to skills such as speaking with customers and presentation which will make them better all-round tradesmen, not just roofers.”
Luke O’Gorman, Program Lead at Simian
“The competition itself is brilliant and it really stretched the apprentices – you can actually see them growing during the tasks. We have always enjoyed a high level of support from BMI – both in terms of their trainers visiting us and product donations.”
Alan Lander, Tutor and Director of RoofTrain
Both flat and pitched roofing apprentices are invited to submit entries online by 26th April. Up to 20 finalists will be selected in May and invited to compete in the two-day final at the BMI Academy in July where the winners will be crowned.
Entrants must be a roofing apprentice or student currently working towards qualified status. The Competition is open to residents of the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man and the Republic of Ireland aged over 16 years.
